Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Server Based Computing
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server.

VDI adds further functionality to the client/server
computing model (also referred to as server-based
computing (SBC)). Combining both VDI and other
traditional SBC technologies allows hardware, operating systems, user data and applications to be virtualised and independant.
Desktop and Application Virtualisation provies user
environments in a layered, modular and centrally managed
approach.
This technology can be delivered from the data centre and accessed by the client devices, whereby only the screen information is transmitted between the server and the client, or streamed down to the client device for offline access.
Hardware & software upgrades, application deployment, technical support and data storage & backup are simplified because all management is centralised in the Data Centre. Data and applications reside on a few servers rather than on hundreds or thousands of clients.
Production and Test Optimisation
CIO’s are under constant pressure to deliver high quality enterprise applications and desktops more quickly at lower cost. While delivering quality software on time and on budget has never been easy, the task is further
complicated by modern multi-tier architectures, hardware, multiple operating systems and applications.
Using Desktop and Application Virtualisation for
production and testing results in immediate
improvements in time to market, costs and quality.
Virtualisation and Desktop Consolidation
Users can access their desktop and applications on demand from anywhere on the network, from home or on the road, from any type of client device.
All the data is stored on secure servers without it
being ‘spread out’ onto the less secure client
computers.
Gartner estimate a 50% reduction in TCO as typical for most implementations, due primarily to the greatly improved server utilisation and management that Desktop and Application Virtualisation provides.
As enterprises grow, IT need to rapidly increase
computing capacity – often in the form of new desktops with a variety of operating environments, applications and user requirements. The resulting desktop sprawl is costly in terms of capital and people needed to operate, manage, and upgrade new desktops.
Desktop and Application consolidation and containment provides a solution for these problems. Virtual infrastructures enables workload isolation and granular resource control for all of the system’s computing and I/O resources.
Virtualisation facilitates rapid changes to meet business needs, new desktops are deployed in minutes not hours, making it easier to move desktops between physical
hardware.
Virtual machines are completely isolated from the host machine and other virtual machines. If a virtual machine crashes, all others are unaffected. Data does not leak across virtual machines and applications can only communicate over configured network connections. Complete virtual machine environments are saved as a single file; easy to back up, move and copy.
Desktops can be provisioned on demand as users require and businesses grow. Operating system and application upgrades can be seamlessley rolled from a central repository.
Storage is also dramatically reduced as users can be classified into groups, using a single ‘master’ desktop image.
Computrad has implemented desktop and
application virtualisation environments for a wide range of company sizes and industry types globally. We have assisted US Federal Agencies, e-gaming companies, government, law firms, charities and universities.
