Palo Alto Reduces PCI Cost and Complexity

Wednesday, 18th February, 2009

Okay,

So PCI is all about the storing, processing and transmitting of credit card data.

PCI is a compliance that is recognised to the end-user as a secure ‘vessel’ for credit card transactions.

So virtually all e-gaming / e-commerce sites will need to be PCI compliant

Getting PCI compliant is an expensive process for a company, and the PAN box can reduce the cost and complexity of this.

The PAN can;

• Segment the network which reduces the cost of the PCI as we only interesting in the network portion that deals with credit card data i.e. not having a flat network. The PAN unit is a firewall with strong access controls to network segments

The PCI network segmentation requires the following, which the PAN is capable of delivering by putting in VWire, inline to separate the cooperate network from the credit card portion of the network.

• Must be easy to implement, manage and configure with no reconfiguring of the network
• Must tie into directory to be identity based (not IP or MAC based)

Customer can’t really use VLANS as they require reconfiguring of network and can be bypassed with VLAN Hopping and ARP Poisoning.

Must people use a firewall for access control and NAC for identity base to meet the requirement of PCI. Not only is this costly but also costly on auditor time to go through all devices and their configurations / policies.

PAN is one unit that meets this PCI requirement. It can also check for credit card leaks on the wire, secure policies against it and prevent threats and confidential data transfer (like DLP)...

... All in one box!
